  • Be aware that the batteries drain quickly and this can have a significant effect on the performance of your robot. Therefore try to limit the number of components on the board, as the more components you use, the quicker your battery will drain!

  • Test each of your electronic components individually and record results as these will be very useful when it comes to the write-up! Also be aware that components of the same type will not give the same readings, so test each one!

  • Keep all of your code in one person's user area and apply appropriate permissions to the folder. Keep the filenames relevant with a date, as it can be easy to lose track of the latest version/best version of the software.

  • The HandyBoards can only handle a certain number of concurrent processes at once, so if your program crashes with a strange error, maybe you've got too many processes on the go!

  • Don't leave the writing of your report to the last minute - it takes longer than you think! (It's 2am now!)

  • Remember, things always go wrong… have a back up plan in case your components fail or the robot does not perform as expected.

  • The Lego book you are given at the start is very useful - it has lots of useful code snippets for sensors/motors and switches.

  • There are useful robot kit references on the module website. Have a look at them!

  • The Lego motors and servo motors don't fit together too well… if you've got Lego motors at home, use them as they're much better!
